BAKER — Police arrested one man and plan to arrest one more in the shooting and attempted robbery of a Baker woman, Police Chief Mike Knaps said Thursday.

Three young men approached the woman from behind as she was walking home on a grassy area between the entrance to the Baker Walmart store and East Myrtle Street. The men demanded her purse and when she refused, one of them shot her in the leg with a flare gun, Knaps said.

The woman was not seriously injured, although the robbers had pushed nails into the flare cartridge before it was fired, Knaps said.

East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s deputies were getting gasoline at a nearby station and heard and saw witnesses calling for them. Baker police and sheriff’s deputies with police dogs searched woods and fields off Plank Road in an attempt to find the robbers.

The man accused of firing the flare pistol later came into the Walmart store, and police took him into custody.

Knaps said the two people, whose identities were not released pending further investigation, were involved in a disturbance Wednesday at a Plank Road apartment complex.

The three faces charges of attempted first-degree murder and attempted armed robbery, he said.
