Dem Dames of the Felicianas is having a town-hall meeting Tuesday featuring Tara Hollis, a Democratic candidate for governor in the Oct. 22 primary election.
The free event will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Jackson Civic Center, 2084 Charter St. (La. 10) in Jackson.
Hollis, a self-described “wife, mother, schoolteacher, and farmer,” is running a shoestring campaign against incumbent Bobby Jindal.
Health program planned
Baker Councilman Charles Vincent and the Baker branch library are sponsoring a health awareness and screening program from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the library, 3501 Groom Road.
Activities offered are voluntary screening tests, including those for sickle cell anemia, cholesterol and blood pressure, provided by the staff of the LSU Earl K. Long Medical Center.
Information will be given by representatives from the American Cancer Society, CASA, the Baton Rouge Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation and other health organizations.

Art contest set
The Audubon Regional Library is sponsoring a commissioned painting contest for an East Feliciana-theme painting to hang in a public building in the parish.
The painting must be 720 square inches and in a two-dimensional medium on canvas. Applications are due Sept. 23; call (225) 683-4290 for details and the full proposal.
Joy Petty is the featured artist through October at the Zachary Utilities Office on Main Street.
Polish that résumé
A workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Baker branch library, 3501 Groom Road, to help job-seekers prepare résumés. Laptop computers will be set up in the meeting room, and participants may come in at any time and leave when they are finished.
A library staff member will assist in finding and using résumé templates, updating existing résumés, helping with online résumé submission and inserting a résumé into an online job application.
A USB jump drive will be needed to save your work.

OLLI classes starting
Registration is under way for Osher Lifelong Learning Institute’s fall classes in the Felicianas, either by phone at (225) 578-6763 or online at http://www.outreach.lsu.edu/olli. Some classes begin Monday, and the second session begins in the first week of November.
Some of the topics covered this fall are the life and science of Charles Darwin, conversational Spanish, basic woodworking, beginning quilting, beginning oil painting, yoga, computer questions answered and the best writers published by LSU Press in the best of LSU Fiction.
