Marches to observe civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday are scheduled Monday in Baker and Zachary.

The Baker march will begin at 8 a.m. from the Baker Municipal Center, 3325 Groom Road. A short celebratory program and light breakfast will follow. James Kador, Baker High assistant principal, will be the guest speaker.

Baker’s march is sponsored by People Organized for Nonviolent Youth.

The Zachary Martin Luther King Jr. Committee’s annual march from Zachary City Hall to New Pilgrim Baptist Church on Old Weis Road will begin at 6 p.m. The Rev. Errol Domingue will be the guest speaker for the program that follows, and music will be provided by a community choir.

Door prizes will be awarded, and parents are encouraged to bring their children to receive school supplies. The theme is “What Are You Doing to Make a Difference?”

King program

Baker Councilman Charles Vincent is sponsoring a program at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Baker branch library on the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. School supplies and black history magazines will be given to students who attend.

Holiday closings

Zachary’s municipal offices will be closed Monday, but Waste Management will collect garbage on its Monday routes in the city as usual, under the terms of the company’s contract with the city, Public Works Director Chris Davezac said.

In Baker, Allied Waste also will collect garbage on its Monday routes.

Livestock show

The annual West Feliciana 4-H and Feliciana Livestock Club’s annual mini-farm will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at the West Feliciana Sports Park’s livestock barn, giving youngsters of all ages a chance to learn about farming and raising a variety of animals.

The Livestock Club’s livestock show begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday and will run until about 2 p.m. More than 75 exhibitors will be showing dairy cows, steers, swine, poultry, rabbits and goats.

Paint ’em red

Zachary Mayor David Amrhein and Baker Mayor Harold Rideau are asking businesses in their respective cities to support the American Heart Association during February by entering a “Decorate Your Door” contest in an effort to “Paint the Town Red.”

Registration forms for Zachary can be obtained at the Mayor’s Office, 4700 Main St., or can be downloaded from the city’s website, The deadline is Jan. 25, and the entrance fee is $50.

Audubon Arbor Day

Audubon State Historic Site will observe Arbor Day with a program from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Visitors may walk the same paths used by one of the most famous naturalists in American history, John James Audubon, hear talks on his paintings and enjoy children’s and family nature activities. The historic site is on La. 965 in West Feliciana Parish.
