Glen “Big Baby” Davis, the former LSU basketball star now playing with the Boston Celtics, will hang out with teenagers and play games from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Zachary branch library, 1900 Church St.
The stop is part of Davis’ four-day visit to the parish next week to promote reading and literacy. He is featured in a children’s book, “Basketball with Big Baby.”
Vincent Historic sites spared
The three state historic sites still open in the Felicianas — Rosedown Plantation, Audubon and Port Hudson — will continue operating from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, despite a cutback on hours at other state parks because of budget cuts.
Centenary in Jackson closed last year.
On Saturday, Audubon on La. 965 in West Feliciana Parish presents a special program, “Colonial Militia Muster,” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, recalling the sights and sounds of an 1810 militia muster in the colony of Spanish West Florida.
Also on Saturday, Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site in St. Francisville continues its series of living history demonstrations, with Interpretive Ranger Sasha Traña demonstrating toy making and games of the 19th century. The program is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the yard behind the main house.
Baker Councilman Charles Vincent, a Southern University history professor, has been chosen to participate in a National Endowment for the Humanities summer institute, a five-week program at John Hopkins University’s Center for Africana Studies.
The summer topic is “Slaves, Soldiers, Rebels: Black Resistance in the Tropical Atlantic, 1760-1880.”
Zachary Artist Guild member Carol Oufnac Mahan’s work will be exhibited in the Zachary City Utility Office through July. Mahan is a fine arts graduate of LSU.
The St. Francisville Community Market will start at 9 a.m. Saturday and continue until 1 p.m. in Parker Park on Commerce Street. Kevin Johnson will sing from 10 a.m. until noon under the gazebo.
Library teen programs
The Baker branch library, 3501 Groom Road, will offer a program on stenciling for teenagers at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Learn the art of stenciling with acrylic paint on your jeans, T-shirt, book bag or other fabric item. Registration is required; call (225) 778-5950.
The Zachary branch library, 1900 Church St., will present a program by Rumiko Bourg, president of the Japan Club of Baton Rouge, on Japan and the Japanese tea ceremony at 3 p.m. Saturday.
At 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Zachary branch, Peter Sze will demonstrate and teach the art of origami. Supplies will be provided.
