Pen Pals, Inc. is a nonprofit, no-kill animal shelter and adoption center located on the grounds of Dixon Correctional Center in Jackson.

Pen Pals Inc. Dog and Cat Shelter and Adoption Center’s mission is to provide a safe and healthy environment for homeless dogs and cats; medical needs for the animals at the shelter; teach basic commands to the animals in order to make them more adoptable; reduce pet overpopulation through an aggressive spay/neuter program; reunite lost pets with their owners; secure adoptions for the animals; and raise money to assist with medical, operating costs and other care.

The program includes comprehensive training of future veterinarians in shelter environments and also provides programs promoting rehabilitation of those incarcerated at DCI.

Once the facility receives an animal, it is vaccinated, dewormed, tested for major diseases, and before leaving for their forever home, pets are spayed/neutered. Pen Pals operates solely on donations and volunteer veterinary services, and accepts dog or cat food, blankets, towels, animal beds and toys to keep pets busy.

Adoption fees are $40 for adult cats, dogs, kittens and puppies, and $10 for an optional microchip.
