Jeff Travis, 47, of Ethel, has announced his candidacy for East Feliciana Parish sheriff.
Travis, a Democrat, worked for the Louisiana Department of Corrections for 25 years, included jobs as supervisor and direct liaison between all sheriffs in Louisiana and U.S. Marshals for corrections issues. He retired as chief of operations.
He was head warden at Rayburn Correctional Center, 2006-2008, and served as commander of the Critical Incident Management Center for hurricanes and natural disasters.
Born and raised in East Feliciana, Travis attended Jackson Elementary, Silliman Institute, Centreville Academy and Panola Junior College in Carthage, Texas. He has been married to Dana Giroir Travis for 26 years and has two children, Courtney and Hunter. The family lives in Ethel and attends Second Baptist Church in Jackson.
Travis is a member of the East Feliciana Drug and Alcohol Awareness Council, Lions Club, Masonic Lodge — St. Albans 28, Louisiana Prison Chapel Foundation, National Association of Wardens and Superintendents, Correctional Peace Officers Foundation, Southern States Correctional Association, DOC Credit Union’s board of directors and is chairman of its personnel committee. He served also as co-chairman of the American Correctional Association’s adult corrections committee.
“As sheriff, I will work hard to ensure your safety, be there to listen to your problems, and make the right decisions, exercising proper care for our parish,” Travis said.
The election for sheriff is Oct. 24.
