West Feliciana boys squad primed to defend Class 3A track title
The West Feliciana boys track and field team ran away with the title honors at the Class 3A Region 3 meet at Kentwood High last week, giving the Saints momentum heading into the state meet.
The Saints, who will defend their Class 3A outdoor championship Friday at LSU’s Bernie Moore Stadium, scored 114 points to easily outdistance second-place Parkview Baptist (62) and No. 3 Lutcher (48).
The Lady Saints scored 67 points to finish fourth behind Brusly (83), Lusher Charter (80) and Sacred Heart of New Orleans (74).
The regional meet is less about team points and more about top-three-placing individuals. All top three finishers from the regional automatically qualified for the state meet.
Setting the tone at the regionals, Derek Turner won first place in the 200-meter dash in 22.17 seconds and second in the 100 (10.98) while his brother, Darius Davis, won the 400 (46.86) and finished second in the 200 (22.19) behind Turner. Davis is the defending state champ in the 200 and the 400 and both runners are key for the relays.
Three West Feliciana relay teams also will compete in the state championships. The Saints won the 4x200 (1:28.55), finished second in the 4x400 (3:33.71) and third in the 4x100 (43.29).
Jacob Fudge won two events to advance — the discus (150 feet, 4 inches) and the shot put (52-06). Chandler Sullivan finished second in the 1,600 run in 4:44.74 and second in the 3,200 run (10:33.94) while Hunter Fudge advances with a third in the 1,600 (4:49.61).
Kia Coleman captured the long jump at the regional meet with a 17-feet, 7-inch effort. She also finished second in the triple jump (35-4.5). Kennedy London qualified in two events, with a second in the 100 hurdles (16.11) and third in the 100 (12.77). Kelly Goff also qualified in two events, finishing second in the 3,200 (12:21.31) and third in the 1,600 (5:36.68).
Also advancing to the state meet are the 4x100 relay team, which finished second (50.40), and the 4x200 relay team (1:46.26).
Tigers third in regional meet
The East Feliciana boys track and field squad is poised to make a run at the Class 2A state championship on May 5 after a solid third-place finish at the Class 2A Region II meet last week at Episcopal High.
The Tigers scored 67 points to finish behind Episcopal (159) and Christian Life (111). The Lady Tigers, meanwhile, finished 14th with 7 points.
Sprinter Treydarius Carr won first in the 200-meter dash in 22.11 seconds and second in the 100 (11.18) to qualify for the state meet in both events. He also anchored the winning 4x100 relay (42.40 seconds) and 4x200 relay teams (1:28.93). Also qualifying for the state meet is Richard Davis with a second in the 400 (49.79). For the girls, Darnesha Dunn advanced to the state meet with a second-place finish in the high jump (4-08).
West Feliciana falls in playoffs
The West Feliciana baseball team won’t be defending its Class 3A state title won a year ago in Lake Charles. The 15th-seeded Saints were surprised on their home field by 18th-seeded Winnfield 2-1 in the first round of the playoffs to close the season.
West Feliciana finishes with a 12-18 record, including 4-8 in District 6-3A.
Sparks earns academic honor
West Feliciana tennis player Caroline Sparks received the LHSAA All-Academic Award at the recent state tennis tournament. Sparks, a graduating senior, earned a 4.0 GPA for all four years at WFHS.
