Saints host Berwick in second-round playoff game

By halftime of last week’s first-round Class 3A playoff game, the No. 6-seeded West Feliciana football team had built a dominating 35-0 advantage and was probably beginning to look forward to the next round. Eventually, the Saints enjoyed a comfortable 42-13 victory over No. 27 North Webster.

That win sets up Friday’s second-round clash at home against No. 11-seeded Berwick. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The Panthers of District 8-3A advanced with a 34-14 triumph over No. 22 Eunice in the opening round and improved to 8-3 for the season including three straight wins.

West Feliciana quarterback Derek Turner set the tone early against North Webster, dashing 47 yards for an opening-drive touchdown. He followed that up with an interception return for a touchdown and Derius Davis gave the Saints a 21-0 first quarter lead with an 8-yard scoring run.

Davon Harris added a 4-yard scoring run and Harris added a 24-yard touchdown pass from Turner for the five-TD lead at the intermission.

Clayton Howard contributed a 14-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter for a 42-0 lead before the visitors managed two second-half touchdowns. The Saints collected 398 yards of total offense with Turner running for 112 yards and passing for 88 more. The West Feliciana defense held the visitors to 213 mostly second-half yards and just eight first downs.

The winner of Friday’s game will play the winner of No. 30 Westlake and No. 14 Northwest on Nov. 24 in the quarterfinals.
