East Feliciana sheriff faces four challengers in October primary _lowres

Jeff Travis

Challenger Jeff Travis has won the East Feliciana sheriff’s race, defeating four-term incumbent Talmadge Bunch and winning enough ballots to avoid a runoff in the five-way race.

Travis, the recently retired former chief of operations for the Louisiana Department of Corrections, claimed 51 percent of the vote.

Bunch, the parish’s sheriff since 2000, trailed with 38 percent of the vote. Since Travis claimed more than half of the ballots cast, he’s claimed Bunch’s job outright without having to face the sheriff again in a Nov. 21 runoff.

Clinton Police Chief Fred Dunn placed third with 9 percent of the vote, while Troy Abshire and Richard Sobers garnered 1 percent each.

All five candidates in the race are Democrats.
