The Greater Baton Rouge Model Railroaders have a new train, one designed to play on instead of watch or travel in.

The club has built a large wooden play train that serves as a 33-foot-long jungle gym at the group's home at 3406 College St., Jackson. Designed to mimic a real train, kids can walk or crawl through the locomotive all the way to the caboose.

Visitors can see and play on the play train, which has proven to be a magnet for kids, and view all the club's trains in operation on the second and fourth Saturday of each month from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free.

The members who built the train include Blane Deorche, Tom Mills, Chuck Seigel and Andy Martin. Martin and his wife, Bettye, painted the structure — tight spaces were part of the challenge for the painting team.

"This train is built for kids, not adults. We just don't fit into these tight spaces very well," said Martin.
