As a culminating activity on their interdisciplinary learning unit based on the text ‘Star Wars: Jedi Academy,’ students in Lauren Mayfield’s small reading group at Jackson Elementary School built light sabers with the assistance of Mayfield’s family. During the unit, students also read nonfiction articles, watched instructional videos on light saber construction and developed extended writing pieces on the differences between expectations and reality.
