Fifth-graders in coach Marcia Houtz’s physical education classes at Jackson Elementary School have been testing their green thumbs throughout the school year.
Through a partnership with East Feliciana Parish 4-H and LSU Agricultural Agent Leanna Cupit, the students have learned the basics of home gardening through the school’s agriculture and gardening program.
In the fall, East Feliciana Cooperative Extension workers demonstrated how to build garden beds and taught the basics of plant growth. Since then, the students have spent time each month tending to and discussing the garden, and in winter, they planted carrots, radishes, lettuce and greens.
“Now that spring has arrived, the youth spent a recent afternoon harvesting the winter garden and planting a spring pizza garden, consisting of plants you’d find on a pizza, such as tomato, basil and bell pepper,” Cupit said.
