When Jeanne “GG” Evans Butler, of Mandeville, learned that the historic McKnight’s Department Store in Clinton was for sale, she jumped at the opportunity to buy it.
A River Ridge native, Butler had a successful 25-year career in medical sales but always desired to own her own business.
“In September, a wonderful opportunity presented itself, and after spending some time in Clinton and speaking to Ike McKnight, I knew the community was where I wanted to establish my business,” Butler said Nov. 27 at the grand opening of Boutique by GG.
Since 1929, McKnight’s was owned and operated by three generations of McKnights at 12321 St. Helena St.
“It’s been quite the whirlwind, but after some renovation work, we were ready to open,” said Butler, who is called “GG” by her husband, Tim.
The shop offers much of the same quality merchandise as the previous owners, Ike and Pat McKnight, along with other unique items.
Women’s linen clothing, designer shoes, handbags and jewelry, as well as home decor, pewter, crystal, Christmas ornaments and newborn accessories are featured.
Eventually, Boutique by GG may offer a selection of men’s shirts and belts, perhaps by Columbia or Magellan, Butler said.
Tim Butler, a native of Baker, and daughter, Kathleen, are happy to help out on occasion.
“My family is very excited to be part of the Clinton community,” said Jeanne “GG” Butler.
Among those attending the ribbon cutting ceremony were Clinton Mayor Lori Ann Bell, East Feliciana Parish Clerk of Court David Dart, East Feliciana Chamber of Commerce Director Audrey Faciane and past Chamber President Martin Macdiarmid.
Boutique by GG is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
