Volunteers with the Clinton Volunteer Fire Department made their annual visit to two East Feliciana elementary schools to promote fire safety during October’s Fire Prevention Awareness Month.

Teaching the students what to do if they see smoke or flames, volunteers promoted the message “Get low and go.”

David Dart, a volunteer firefighter of 15 years, said he loves visiting with students every year to talk to them about fire safety.

“I always bring them goodies, but before I hand them out, I get them to make me a promise,” Dart said. “I tell them to pick up their clothes and toys off the floor of their room at night before going to bed because in the event of a fire, they don’t want to trip over those things trying to get out of the house.” Dart was accompanied by Clinton’s Fire Chief Doug Beecham and volunteers Ben Chastein and Marcus and Renee Stanga.

The group visited Silliman on Oct. 9 and Clinton Elementary on Oct. 10.
