Denham Springs High School junior and seniors and their parents picked up information needed to prepare for graduation and college during the school’s parents night workshop Oct. 15.

The goal of the meeting was to inform parents and students about graduation requirements and the steps needed to complete them. More than 130 junior parents and 150 senior parents attended to learn how they can continue the process of preparing their children for college.

The event was hosted by academic counselors Christon Causey, a juniors’ counselor; and Shayne Sanders, who counsels seniors. Topics of discussion included ACT and TOPS requirements, college admission processes, financial aid and scholarship applications.

“The goal is to give parents the tools and information needed to prepare them for post-secondary success,” said Brandi Aucoin, assistant principal of Curriculum and Instruction at Denham Springs High. “We want to foster the culture of achievement and to get more parental support for the continuance of education.”

Counselors stressed the importance of learning about the TOPS program early. The Taylor Opportunity Program for Students is a program of state scholarships for Louisiana residents who attend a Louisiana public college or university. Parents learned about the four different TOPS awards: TOPS Opportunity Award, TOPS Performance Award, TOPS Honors Award, and TOPS Tech Award.

Parents were advised to take advantage of the worksheets, websites, as well as pamphlets regarding how to prepare for sending a child to college. The high school will hold a College Career Fair on Nov. 14 for students only. Then, students will be offered the opportunities to visit booths from universities in Louisiana, learn about deciding on a major once accepted into a university, and view post-graduation career possibilities.

Upcoming events also include Financial Aid Night and talks on Advance Placement and diploma requirements. If parents did not attend the recent meetings, they can contact their child’s guidance counselor for more information at Christon.Causey@lpsb.org or Shayne.Sanders @lpsb.org.
