Summertime for thousands of area youth is wrapping up this week.

Families are getting in last-minute getaways and stores are filled with parents shopping for back-to-school supplies.

Livingston Parish public school students report to class Aug. 7.

The first holiday of the new school year comes on Sept. 7, when the system is closed for Labor Day.

Teen party at library

Livingston Parish Library’s end-of-the-summer teen party begins at 2 p.m. Friday at the Denham Springs-Walker Branch Library, 8101 U.S. 190, Denham Springs.

Ages 12 to 18 can participate in a superhero trivia game, crafts, activities and other games.

Computer basics classes

The Livingston Parish Library offers computer classes each month.

A computer basics class is set for 2 p.m. Monday at the Denham Springs-Walker branch and at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Albany-Springfield branch.

School backpack giveaway

Satsuma Baptist Church, 29880 S. Satsuma Road, Livingston, will give away 120 backpacks to local schoolchildren at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Children must be present to receive backpacks.

Jambalaya, sno-balls, cotton candy, games and door prizes will be available.

Smoky Mountain trip

The VFW Travelers invite area residents to join them on a Smoky Mountain Christmas Show trip on Nov. 1-7.

Anyone 50 and older can take part in the group trip, a news release said.

The trip includes lodging, 10 meals, six Christmas shows, motorcoach transportation and other activities, including a Smith Family Dinner Show, Smoky Mountain National Park tour and Lookout Mountain Incline Railway ride.

Cost of the trip is $587, with $75 deposit due in advance.
