St. Thomas Aquinas Regional Catholic High School’s nationally-ranked dance team, the STA Starlettes, recently completed the Universal Dance Association Dance Camp in Baton Rouge. The team won first place in the home routine competition, and also received a superior trophy for their accomplishments during the week, both of which earn them an automatic bid to UDA’s National Dance Team Championship in January in Orlando, Fla.
The team also received the Leadership Award, which is the most coveted award at camp, selected by the camp participants, according to a news release from the school. The team also received the Drill Down Top Team Award and the Team Full Out Award, presented by the UDA staff to the teams that did an exceptional job on their team routine choreography, the news release said. They also received a spirit stick.
Starlettes’ junior Cailin Sampey received second runner-up, senior Sydney St. Pierre received first runner-up, and junior Emily Owens won as drill down queen during the Drill Down Competition.
Five Starlettes were selected as All-American Dancers. They are senior captains Skylar Compton, Isabella Perrilloux and Sydney St. Pierre, and juniors Chloe Chauvin and Haileigh Bolton. The girls all received medals and the opportunity to dance in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. The seniors can perform in the New Year’s Day parade in London.
“I’d say it was a very rewarding week,” said new Starlettes coach Beth Fagan. “We started day one on fire with confidence, and wanted to grow and improve as much as possible.”
“We did receive first in home routine, and achieved our goal to win the drill down award in both the team and individual competitions — we had the last three standing and 47 drill down ribbons,” Fagan said. “And who could forget our five All-Americans who stood out by far among the rest. But the best part was being voted by our peers for the Leadership Award. That is what this truly is about! We are on our way to a bright and starry future at STA.”
The Starlettes will resume practice in August for football season.
The 2014-15 Starlettes are seniors Compton, Perrilloux and St. Pierre; juniors Bolton, Chauvin, Owens and Sampey; sophomore Nancy Donnes; and freshmen Madalynn Bouterie, Londyn Daniel and Rachel Pistorius.
