The Denham Springs High School Athletic Hall of Fame and Sport-N-Center are accepting nominations for the next class of inductees, said group spokesman Jim Spring.

Nominations for the Class of 2016 will be accepted through March 31.

This is the fourth time Sport-N-Center has served as title sponsor for the showcase of local talent, Spring said.

Entering its sixth year, having inducted 51 former Yellow Jacket sports heroes, “there is no shortage of legendary athletes, coaches and supporters to continue growing the ranks of the community’s most prestigious club,” Spring said.

“The challenge, however, is to encourage members of the public to nominate deserving sports figures for consideration,” he said.

The Hall of Fame Selection Committee does not nominate candidates, leaving the function solely to the public.

“Individuals may not nominate themselves, so it’s really left to the public to recognize our best athletes, coaches and supporters by taking the time to nominate them,” said Butch Wax, former Denham Springs High School principal and coach.

Usually, the nominee or family members can provide the documentation, but someone has to take the initiative to organize and submit the nomination packet, he said.

“If you’re a family member, close friend, or former teammate or coach, this is a great opportunity for you to honor their athletic contributions,” Wax said. “We urge you to contact the nominee right away and get the process started. They will always appreciate what you did for them.”

In addition to the 51 sports figures inducted thus far, two star athletes have been selected but not yet inducted due to scheduling and travel difficulties. Former Australian exchange student Katrina Hibbert, who lives in Melbourne, Australia, and Tasmin Mitchell, the most celebrated athlete in school history who plays international pro basketball, will be officially inducted when their schedules permit.

During the past five years, 41 athletes, eight coaches and two supporters have been enshrined. Two of these were inducted in the dual category of athlete-coach. A father and daughter, George Meadors and Sarah Meadors Mestepey, and two sisters, Nikki Dixon Leader and Sammy Dixon Hannaman, are also among the inductees.

Nominations must conform to the Hall of Fame nomination guidelines available at www.denhamspringshs.org or by picking up a copy at the school office.

Nominations cannot be accepted by email or fax. Because guidelines require an 8-by-10 photograph of the candidate, nominations must be mailed or hand-delivered to Denham Springs High School, attention: Athletic Director, 1000 N. Range Avenue, Denham Springs, LA 70726. Submission must be postmarked or hand-delivered no later than March 31 to be considered for induction this year.

Once all nominations have been received and screened for completeness, the selection committee will meet to review the submissions and vote on candidates for induction this fall. Nominees who are not selected will remain active candidates and be voted on annually for five years.
