Local Girl Scouts are marking the Halloween birthday of Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low with a fall festival and birthday celebration from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 31 at Camp Whispering Pines in Independence.

The celebration will include a duck derby fundraiser benefiting the Girl Scouts’ camps at 11 a.m. The duck derby will be held in the camp’s new trefoil-shaped swimming pool. Prizes will go to the winners of each heat.

The grand prize winner will receive either $500 in duck dough, which can be used for camp, programs and shop items, or four patron party tickets to the Girl Scouts’ “Cookies & Cocktails” gala, according to a news release. Winners do not need to be present to win. Other activities include face painting, making s’mores, hayrides, pumpkin painting, climbing the camp’s 40-foot rock wall, canoeing and more. Hotdogs and soft drinks will be available.

The minimum entrance fee for the festival is $10 for two tickets and one duck. Various adoption packages are available. Pre-registration is required by Oct. 16. Visit http://bit.ly/fallfestduckderby to adopt a duck. Call Carrie Thomas at (504) 355-5885 with questions.
