The Ponchatoula Kiwanis will host its first Fall Festival and BBQ Competition Oct. 7-9 in Ponchatoula Memorial Park, 301 N. Sixth St. The family-friendly festival will feature carnival rides, games, a petting zoo, live music, food and refreshments while more than 50 local and national cooking teams from throughout the South compete for more than $5,000 in prize money, a news release said.

“Right now, all Tangipahoa festivals are in the spring. It’ll be great to have a weekend-long event in the fall when the weather begins to cool,” Kiwanis President Brian Steib said.

Steib said money raised at the festival will go toward the Ponchatoula Chamber of Commerce’s efforts to promote the city and to Ponchatoula public school teachers to purchase classroom materials not provided by the school district.

Barbecue competition setup will be Oct. 7 and the cook-off will take place Oct. 8. It is a Barbeque Competitors Alliance sanctioned event, but amateurs may compete in the chicken, brisket and ribs competitions.

“We are also looking for corporate and individual sponsors who will be given media and banner recognition, a designated rest area, coupons for free rides and festival fare as well as other tokens of appreciation,” Steib said. “Tangi Tourism and the Ponchatoula Chamber of Commerce will help promote the Fall Fest.”
