Robert Jackson, a sixth-grader at Westside Junior High School in Walker, participated in Job Shadow Day on Feb. 2.

The full-day event helps middle school students gain exposure to various careers.

Southern University Agricultural Center Assistant Area Agent Nicolette Gordon gave Jackson a firsthand look at the personal skill set, knowledge and education needed to pursue a career in cooperative extension.

Jackson learned about building good relationships within the community and being in the field and completed a grocery shopping assignment to buy ingredients to make a smoothie. He then used the smoothie bike to learn about educating and recruiting youths to live healthy lives.

“I like that you can ride your bike at work to make a smoothie,” he said.

Jackson also toured the St. Helena 4-H Goat Farm to see the Boer and Norwegian goats that will be shown during the AgCenter’s 73rd annual state livestock show in March.
