The Walker Police Department is holding its 11th annual “From Our Uniform to Yours” school uniform drive through the end of June, according to a news release.

The department will collect new and used school uniforms to be professionally cleaned, sized and prepared for distribution to families who need assistance outfitting their children for the new school year. Uniforms must meet the requirements of Livingston Parish schools.

Cash and uniform vendor gift cards also will be accepted.

Blue collection barrels for new and used uniforms are at:

Walker Baptist Church

Walker Walgreens

Quick and Handy Cleaners in Walker

Carter’s Grocery in Walker

Walker Winn-Dixie.

Uniforms, cash donations and gift cards also may be dropped off between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Walker Police Department, 13179 Burgess Ave. Checks can be made payable to the Walker Police Department and mailed to P.O. Box 988, Walker, LA 70785.

Walker Police Capt. John Sharp recommends that donors do not send cash through the mail. He said donations also can be picked up by officers or made through PayPal.

“It is really a blessing to be a part of this program and to be able to see and experience how neighbors come together to help each other,” Sharp said in the release. “With so many bad things happening in the world today, it is so refreshing to see people working together for the common good.”

Sharp said he anticipates a greater need for donations this year than in the previous 10 years.

“Right now, we are significantly behind last year’s donations,” he said. “We are concerned that if this trend continues, we may, for the first time, have to turn some people away.”

Walker police will distribute the uniforms from 8 a.m. to noon July 24 at the Walker Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, 10696 Florida Blvd. Refreshments provided by Mr. Gatti’s, Dominos, Rotolo’s, Coca-Cola, Winn-Dixie and Raising Cane’s will be served.
