Army National Guard Spc. Andrew Hinson spoke to students in Jennifer Perelli’s second-grade class at Hammond Westside Elementary Montessori on Nov. 11 about Veterans Day.

The visit was arranged by Southeastern Louisiana University student Anna Goodson.

Hinson spoke to the students about what the military does for the country, about why serving in the military is important to him and about military ranks.

Hinson also explained how the five branches of the military work together to serve the country, with everyone in each branch having a special job with someone they report back to.

He related this to how the students are under the authority of their teacher at school, and their teacher reports back to the principal, who reports to someone else, and so on, a news release said.

Hinson demonstrated how he stands when someone in higher authority speaks to him and also answered students’ questions.
