Premier Inc., a health care improvement alliance, recently honored North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond for outstanding work improving community health and cost efficiencies, a news release said.

North Oaks earned Premier’s Supply Chain Innovation Award for introducing an antimicrobial stewardship program, the release said.

Pharmacy Clinical Manager Jamie Covington accepted the award at Premier’s annual Breakthroughs Conference and Exhibition this summer in National Harbor, Maryland.

The program promotes the appropriate use of antimicrobials and antibiotics to improve patient outcomes and reduce drug resistance and the spread of infections caused by multidrug-resistant organisms.

In the four years that the program has been in place, Covington said, the effectiveness of antibiotics used to treat bacterial infections has increased from 82 to 98 percent and has resulted in an estimated $2.5 million in savings.
