North Oaks Sports Medicine and North Oaks Physician Group’s orthopaedic surgeons’ Student-Athletes of the Month for January are Meghan Becerra, of St. Thomas Aquinas Regional Catholic High School in Hammond; Bryant Griggs Jr., of Ponchatoula High School; Tré Lessard, of Maurepas High School; and Charley Shaffer, of Springfield High School.

Becerra, 17, is a junior with a 3.8 GPA and has belonged for three years to the Falcons cross-country team, the Louisiana High School Athletic Association state champions. She has been named to the LHSAA All-State Class AA and All-State Composite cross-country teams and the Northshore All-Metro Team and was the Tangipahoa All-Parish Cross-Country Team Most Valuable Player. She also is on the girls basketball and indoor-outdoor track and field teams. Her parents are Kristi and Miguel Becerra.

Griggs, 17, is a senior, has a 3.7 GPA and has played on the basketball team for four years as a guard. He averages 10 points, three assists and five rebounds per game and helped lead the team to its second consecutive Tangipahoa Parish championship with a 9-5 record season. He is a member of the school’s Art Club and plays the bass at Yellowwater Baptist Church in Hammond. His parents are Takisha and Bryant Griggs.

Lessard, 19, is a senior and fourth-year basketball guard at Maurepas High School. He has a 3.3 GPA and leads the Wolves with 88 points scored in eight games. He also is an active member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Future Farmers of America. His parents are Mike and Danielle Lessard.

Shaffer, 17, is a senior, has a 3.4 GPA, is the cheerleading captain and is a three-year member of the golf team. She serves as Beta Club president and Student Council senior class treasurer, is a member of Future Farmers of America and works with Southland Community Church’s homeless veterans program. Her parents are Sandy and Jeff Shaffer.

Student-Athletes of the Month must have a 3.0 GPA or higher, excel in athletic competition, participate in school and community organizations and respect coaches, teammates, officials, teachers and their peers.

In May , male and female Student-Athletes of the Year will be selected from all the monthly honorees for both parishes. Nominations are accepted from coaches, athletic directors, principals and North Oaks Sports Medicine athletic trainers.
