The Tangipahoa Volunteers for Family and Community Busy Bees, an all-volunteer arm of the LSU Extension Service, recently met to work on the club’s literacy program, The Family Book Bag.
Local 4-H members helped Terry Voight, Patricia Schmidt and Sandra Madere assemble teaching kits for kindergarten classes at Amite and Chesbrough elementary schools. Each kit consists of books to be read in the home, information packets for parents and children, and a special gift for each child when they return the book bag.
The Family Book Bag, now in its eighth year, has served over 1,500 kindergartners, teaching better nutrition, the need to read more in the home and the necessity for more physical activities.
Valerie Vincent and Donna Landry, of LSU Extension, provided this year’s information packets and incentives. Other items were purchased with a grant from the Ray Smith Memorial Fund.
