Second- and third-graders at Holy Ghost Catholic School, in Hammond, under the direction of librarian Kathryn Huggett, created pinwheels in recognition of International Day of Prayer for Peace, sponsored by the World Council of Churches, on Sept. 21.

Students listened to a story about peace and then created pinwheels with messages of peace for their school, community and the world. Eighth-grade English 1 students used the pinwheels to decorate the lawn.

Churches and parishes observe the day, which began in 2004 as part of the ecumenical Decade to Overcome Violence, with offerings of prayers for peace.
