High school graduate Ryan Miller, of Denham Springs, recently received a $500 scholarship award from Pelican State Credit Union.

Miller, a member of the credit union’s Denham Springs branch, is one of 13 college-bound students across Louisiana to receive the award. Pelican grants up to $6,500 in scholarships each year.

Miller is a graduate of Walker High School and is the 2015 Walker High School Student of the Year. He was a member of Beta Club, Ambassador Club, Open Door Baptist Church Teen Group and several other scholastic and service organizations. He plans to attend Southeastern Louisiana University with the goal of becoming a licensed nurse practitioner.

“Pelican is committed to serving its branch communities, and our scholarship award program supports credit union members graduating high school who exhibit the same commitment,” Pelican CEO Jeffrey K. Conrad said in a news release.

Scholarship applications, scored by a volunteer committee of Pelican employees, were based on academic achievement, extracurricular activities, leadership, community service and letters of recommendation.

Scholarship applications are accepted from January through April each year. For more information on eligibility and the application process, call (800) 351-4877 or visit www.pelicanstatecu.com/teampelican.
