Top of the Class Accelerated Reader students were honored at Amite Elementary Magnet School on Sept. 26.

Librarian Sandy Daniels honored the top AR students.

These students read the most books and earned the most points, school officials said. The top student of each class was invited to a chocolate milk and doughnut party in the library, and Daniels presented a certificate to each child.

AR is a computer program that helps teachers and librarians monitor children’s independent reading practices.

Students choose books at their reading level and read at their own pace, a news release from the school said. Then, students take a short quiz about the story on the computer. The AR program motivates children to read books for fun and tracks the total number of points they earn from each story, the release said.

AR is a key component to the communication magnet program at AEMS because of its emphasis on reading, the release said.
