Walker High School math teacher Ellen Fort has been selected as a regional winner for the Louisiana Association of Computer Using Educators’ Region II Educator of the Year award.

Fort has been teaching since 1986 and has taught mathematics and social studies to students in kindergarten through 12th grade. She teaches Algebra I, Algebra II and Calculus AP to 10th- through 12th-grade students and runs a math tutoring program during lunch and after school.

Fort is piloting a computer-assisted Algebra I iCLASS course, a parish initiative that provides participating teachers with a class set of laptops to assist students, a news release said.

“Technology can never replace good instruction — it’s a tool to engage the kids in a way that they understand and can relate to,” she said.

Fort will be recognized in December at the annual LACUE conference in New Orleans.
