Roseland police on Thursday arrested a man accused of fatally shooting another man who frequently stayed at his house, marking the first killing of the year in the Tangipahoa Parish town.

Randal Birch, 34, was shot to death by David Mote, 54, in Mote’s front yard around 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Roseland police public information officer Susie Cambre said in a news release.

Birch regularly stayed at Mote’s home in the 12000 block of Tangipahoa Avenue in Roseland, Cambre said.

Mote was arrested Thursday and booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail on one count of second degree murder. The shooting remains under investigation, and the district attorney’s office may upgrade Mote’s charges later, Cambre said.

“We are greatly disturbed by this senseless violence in our town,” Roseland mayor Wanda McCoy said in the news release. “This is the first murder in our town this year and even one murder is one too many.”
