New Orleans jazz vocalist Stephanie Jordan will perform a Lena Horne tribute concert Feb. 10 in the Amite High School Theatre, 403 S. Laurel St., Amite.
The concert, sponsored by the Amite Arts Council, begins at 7 p.m. with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.
The Stephanie Jordan Big Band features jazz style and will honor Grammy Award-winner Horne with the performance. A string section led by Jordan’s sister, violinist Rachel Jordan, will join the band.
Arts Council President Charley Vance expressed gratitude for Mayor Buddy Bel and the Amite City Council members for their support. “We appreciate the town being in support of our efforts to bring this high quality entertainment to our community,” said Vance.
"She's good. When we saw her, her performance was outstanding," said Arts Council member Linda Hart of her and her husband's experience watching Stephanie Jordan's performance at another event in Baton Rouge.
Stephanie Jordan says it was "Lena Horne who served as her first introduction to great jazz singers. As a little girl, I wanted to be Lena Horne." She recalls seeing Horn at the Saenger Theater in New Orleans in 1983. "I have witnessed hundreds of performances by a lot of big-name singers, and that one never left me. Lena Horne showed what it meant to take command of a stage."
Admission is $10, and tickets may be purchased at Amite City Hall, Amite Chamber, Dr. Kay Moser’s office, The Mulberry Tree and Mike’s Catfish Inn. For more information, call Amite City Hall at (985) 748-8761.
