Mardi Gras parades 

The Denham Springs Mardi Gras parade begins at 3 p.m., Saturday. It will start at Denham Springs High School and head down Range Avenue. It ends at the Veterans Boulevard intersection near Regions and Iberville banks. Retired Lt. Gen. Russel L. Honore will serve as grand marshal.

The Krewe of Diversion will hold its 24th annual Mardi Gras Boat parade at noon Saturday. Food and St. Jude items will be sold at Manny's, 19706 La. 22, Maurepas. A live auction will be held about 5:30 p.m., after all the boats have returned. Proceeds benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Adopt a pet

The SPCA of Livingston will hold a pet adoption event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, at the PetSmart on Millerville Road, Baton Rouge, off Interstate 12. Adoption screening applications are required. Adoption donations cover many things, including spay/neuter surgeries and age-appropriate vaccines. Each adopter will receive 30 days of free pet insurance, a puppy pack and a free bag of food and coupons from PetSmart while supplies last.

At the library

Storytimes for children of various ages have started for the new year at the Livingston Parish Library. Visit www.mylpl.info to find a time and branch near you.

Remember the library will be closed on Mardi Gras.

Cupcake Wars: Adults can find out if they have what it takes to win Cupcake Wars at the Library. There will be no baking but plenty of eating. Be sure to register beforehand by contacting the specific branch or using the online calendar. 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 6,  at Watson Branch Meeting Room

The Art Studio: This program, 4:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 5, at the Albany-Springfield Branch, allows students ages 12-18 to learn about the fine arts. The February meeting features guest artist Asayo Dvorak, who will teach origami for beginners. All supplies will be provided during the session. Registration is required.

Stargazers: This meeting allows youths ages 8-11 to focus on constellations, nebulae and other items in the heavens. It meets at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 6, in the Albany-Springfield Branch Meeting Room. Registration is required.

Upcoming activities

  • The Livingston Council on Aging is hosting a Valentine/Mardi Gras Dance from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9.
  • The Court Appointed Special Advocate program of Child Advocacy Services needs volunteers from Livingston and Tangipahoa parishes to be the voice for abused and neglected children in their community.
