WALKER — Two two-man fishing teams from Walker High School have qualified to compete in the 2018 BASS National High School Championship, including sophomore Hanson Chaney and junior Bronson Beck, who were ranked the No. 1 BASS high school fishing team in Louisiana.
Also advancing to the national tournament Aug. 2-4 in Paris, Tennessee, are seniors Jason McMillan and Hunter Kogel, who participated in the national tournament last year, becoming the school’s first national fishing tournament finalists. They finished fourth overall in the state this year to qualify for a return trip to the national tournament.
Walker High School started participating in the BASS high school competition four years ago.
“Our team has done extremely well this year, finishing in second place overall in the state and having four teams finish in the top 20 in Louisiana, out of a total of 247 teams statewide,” said Jeremy Ferachi, the BASS fishing team sponsor for Walker High School.
He noted that freshman Peyton Matherne and senior Lance LeBlanc placed 14th in the state, and juniors Brennan Richard and Mackie Faucheaux finished the season in 16th place.
“We have set the bar high for the future. Already, we’re setting higher goals for our team for next year. This group has accomplished so much in just its first four years; it’s exciting to think about what’s ahead,” Ferachi added.
Ferachi noted that the team is made up of a number of two-man fishing teams that compete in several state tournaments. Points are earned for the quantity and quality of fish caught in those competitions. The teams compete in a total of five tournaments during the season, including three state qualifying tournaments.
Seven of Walker High’s teams qualified to fish in this year’s state championship tournament. Two teams finished in the top 20 of that tournament, which had a field of 155 teams, including Mason Ferachi and Luke Ferachi, who placed fifth, and McMillan and Kogel, who earned the 16th spot.
Jeremy Ferachi noted that members of the Walker High School fishing team may be eligible for scholarships to continue competing in BASS fishing tournaments while attending college.
