A 7-year-old girl drowned Saturday while swimming with family and friends in an abandoned gravel pit in Independence, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.
The girl’s mother became frantically worried when she didn’t see her daughter for a few minutes during an outing at the abandoned pit along Alessi Road, sheriff’s spokeswoman Dawn Panepinto said in a news release.
A local spear fisherman found the girl’s body about 10 yards from the shore, and the girl was given CPR until the Independence Fire Department and Acadian Ambulance Services arrived, Panepinto said.
The child was airlifted to North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond, where she could not be revived.
Panepinto said charges will not be filed in the incident.
