Gov. John Bel Edwards, right, speaks to the joint session as the Legislature convenes in special session to fix the budget deficit Monday Feb. 19, 2018, in Baton Rouge.

On Feb. 19, Gov. John Bel Edwards called on Louisiana legislators to come together at the opening of the latest special session to address the state's budget.

The governor invited several people as his guests to the opening session. Each guest has a vested interest in ensuring that the state's critical priorities are protected from devastating cuts.

The list included Donna Satterfeal, of Denham Springs, and her daughter, Brenna Satterfeal.

Brenna Satterfeal is a freshman majoring in special education at Southeastern Louisiana University and receives a TOPS scholarship. Like thousands of other Louisiana students and parents, the protection of funding for TOPS is important to their family. A news release said TOPS was a deciding factor in Brenna Satterfeal's decision to stay in-state to continue her education.
