Boy Scout Troop 888 held its fifth annual 9/11 Remembrance and U.S. Flag Retirement ceremony Sept. 8 at the St. George Fire Department training tower.
The troop, which includes more than 60 members, was formed in 1988 as a merger of Troop 15 from St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church and Troop 777 from Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Today, both organizations sponsor the troop.
Janet Broussard, with Blue Star Moms of Louisiana, was the guest speaker for the ceremony.
After her talk, taps was played as a solemn tribute to “our fallen heroes from 9/11 and all soldiers lost in any battle, war or acts of aggression against the United States,” a news release from the troop said.
Tattered and worn flags were retired by Scouts in accordance with the U.S. flag code. To learn more about the disposal of worn flags, visit usflag.org/uscode36.html.
