The Canary Islanders Heritage Society of Louisiana kicks off a new year with a meeting at 11 a.m. Jan. 6 at the Bluebonnet Library.

The speaker will be society member Greg Lindsly, who will share details of his research of the Canary Islanders who moved into the area around St. Landry, Lafayette, St. Martin and St. Mary parishes.

Lindsly searched records including “Southwest Louisiana Records Vols. 1, 2 and 3) by the Rev. Donald J. Hebert for references to surnames on the “Spanish Ships List of the Canary Islanders” from 1778-79. His research was complicated by other Spanish surnames in the records that weren’t specifically identified as Canary Islanders but matched a list of Canary Islander recruits.

Society meetings are open to the public. Learn more at canaryislanders.org or president@canaryislanders.org.
