Something for everyone this Halloween

BREC continues to offer family-friendly events as Halloween approaches.

“The Monster Squad” comes to Independence Park Theatre for the free Make it a Movie Night at 7 p.m. Friday. The 1987 film is rated PG-13 and tells the story of a group of young friends who must protect their town from the forces of classic movie monsters such as Dracula and Frankenstein. Concessions will be available for purchase.

Bring your pooch to the annual Trick and Treat Howl-o-ween Costume Pawty at the Raising Cane’s Dog Park at Forest Community Park, set for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. Families and dogs are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes and take part in a best dog costume contest and best group costume contest, for which prizes will be awarded. Local pet advocacy groups will sponsor tents with information and treats for humans and canines.

The annual Boo at the Zoo, described as a merry-not-scary trick-or-treating extravaganza, will be held Saturday, Sunday and Oct. 29-30 at BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo. Hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., with zoo grounds closing at 5 p.m., and regular admission applies. Wear costumes and visit treat stations throughout the zoo, ride the spooky train or visit the hay maze and enchanted swamp.

October Sunshine Social

The October Sunshine Social for adults with disabilities and their friends and families gets underway at 6 p.m. Friday at Milton J. Womack Park. The themed monthly socials are sponsored by BREC and Families Helping Families of Greater Baton Rouge and feature a disc jockey, snacks, door prizes, socialization and fun.

Cost is a $5 donation used to support the program, including supplies and door prizes.

If your wardrobe is in need of a little refreshing, stop by the Carver Clothing Swap from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday at Carver Branch Library. Adults will be able to trade their gently used, clean clothing, hats, purses and wallets for free, new-to-them items from other attendees. All remaining items will be donated to Goodwill.
