Members of Runnels Elementary School’s Robotics Club earned top honors and qualified for the state championship during their first competition.
The sixth-grade Electric Einsteins, fifth- and sixth-grade Techno Clan and fifth-grade HydroBots competed Nov. 11 at the Woodlawn High School and Panthrobotics First LEGO League Qualifying Tournament.
Members participated in sessions on Core Values, Projects, Robot Design and Robot Challenge Matches with a total of 14 teams in grades four through eight.
The Electric Einsteins received the Rookie of the Year Award and qualified for the state championship. Team members were Summer Guerin, Gavin McManus, Gavin Oram, Poppy Pellissier, Yaseen Pirzadah, Paul Stevenson and Conor Reynolds.
The Techno Clan earned the Robot Design Award. Team members were Nathan Coxe, Arthur Donaldson, Aubrey Francois, Luke Hillman, Morgan McCloud, Alexa LaPlace and Yaseen Zaid.
The HydroBots came in fourth in the Robot Challenge. Team members were Lina Derzi, Jack Ezell, Sam Kennedy, Mason Pizzalato, Sophia Rabeaux, Zeb Tate, Taylor Valentine and Parker Wright.
“Everyone showed gracious professionalism, teamwork and skill, all while being rookie teams,” club co-sponsor Aprille Wright said. Wright coaches and co-sponsors the team with Alecia Tate.
The state championship meet is slated for Dec. 16 in New Orleans.
