For all those curious about learning how to canoe, kayak or paddleboard, BREC’s Outdoor Adventure Department offers a variety of opportunities both to learn and to practice, said Tara Brown, publicity and marketing manager for BREC.

Water sports have become an increasingly popular program under the Outdoor Adventure umbrella, Brown said, which also offers classes and events on camping, land navigation, geocaching, archery and bicycle safety.

“We cater to the season we’re in, and right now, it’s time to be on the water,” she said. That means the parish parks commission is offering its summer Paddle Up series, which teaches standup paddleboarding safety and technique in a series of four classes, Brown said.

For adults, there is Paddle Up 1, which teaches the most basic skills, Brown said.

This activity will be offered from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. June 24 and July 15 at Milford Wampold Memorial Park on Stanford Avenue, for ages 8 and older. The cost is $10 per person.

The Paddle Up 2 program is an intermediate open-water paddling class, according to the BREC website. Participants practice advanced techniques and learn intermediate maneuvering skills on the lake at Wampold Park.

Paddle Up 2 is planned from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. July 22 and can accommodate ages 8 and older. The cost for these classes is $5 per person.

The Paddle Up 3 class, which was June 6, was a morning paddle at Tickfaw State Park, Brown said, for those who had already taken the first two classes, or paddle boarders with more experience.

The final class, Paddle Up 4 is planned for July 18 at Bogue Chitto State Park, Brown said. All transportation and equipment will be included in the $25 fee.

For those ages 12 and older who want to stay closer to home, BREC also offers a Sunset Paddle from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. July 10 and Aug. 14, also at Wampold Park, Brown said. Kayaks and paddleboards are available on a limited basis, so make sure to email your reservation in advance.
