The Southern University Agricultural Land-Grant Campus’ 75th annual Livestock & Poultry Show is bringing together more than 100 young farmers March 1-3 at the Maurice A. Edmond Livestock Arena.
Youths will show various breeds of cattle, hogs, sheep, lamb, goats and poultry for a chance at winning premiums, ribbons, rosettes and trophy belt buckles.
A week of events leading up to the show kicks off Feb. 23 with a Livestock Show Advisory Council Luncheon at the Southern University Agricultural Center. Other activities include a Livestock Information Social Media Blast on Feb. 26, a Jagriculture Student Livestock Show Cook-Out on the front lawn of Fisher Hall on Feb. 27 and a Jagriculture Student Livestock Show information booth at the Smith-Brown Memorial Student Union on Feb. 28.
The Livestock Show Office is accepting pre-orders of nonprocessed choice meats from various livestock, with all proceeds going directly to participating youths. Available meats are one whole beef, $2,000; one half beef, $1,000; one-fourth beef, $500; one whole pork, $225; one whole lamb, $200; and one whole goat, $175.
There is a processing fee that is not included in the original cost of the meat, a news release said. All purchases must be paid by money order or check, made payable to the Southern University Ag Center Livestock Show, prior to picking up the meat from the slaughter house.
Anyone not preordering meat is available to make a purchase during the show’s Junior Auction Sale beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Maurice A. Edmond Livestock Arena.
Meat will be delivered to two locations: the Cutrer Slaughter House in Kentwood or Rouchers in Plaquemine.
Donations to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank also are welcome.
