Classrooms are closed and many families are looking for summer programs to keep children active and engaged.

Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center has a series of week long camps for children ages 5 to 14.

The camps are $110 per week for East Baton Rouge Parish residents and $132 for anyone living outside the parish.

The Swamp Stomper camps are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 9 to 13, June 16-20, June 23-27, July 14-18 and July 21-25. It’s for ages 7 to 10.

Early drop and late pick up available for an additional $25 fee.

Swamp Explorers camp is for ages 11-14 and a Swamp Squirts program is offered for children 5 to 6 years old.

Looking for something extreme to do this summer?

Perkins Road Community Park features a skate park and BMX track, velodrome, rock climbing wall, a community playground, tennis court, and walking, skating and biking trials.

The skate park is open Sunday through Thursday from sunrise to 10 p.m. Helmets and pads are recommended and bikes are welcome.

The BMX track is open from 5 to 9 om Tuesdays and Wednesdays for open riding.

A music concert more your style?

Check out Perkins Rowe’s Rock ’N’ Rowe concert series each Thursday night in Town Square Park at Perkins Rowe.

MJ and the Redeemers perform from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. June 5.

Rock ’N’ Rowe performances are free.

Perkins Rowe is at Perkins Road and Bluebonnet Boulevard. Live concerts are held every Thursday night through July.

Banquet honors nurses

The Baton Rouge District Nurses Association recently honored several registered nurses at the 25th annual Celebrate Nursing Banquet.

Honored from Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center were Paula June Allen, Rosalind Albarado, Alison Richard, Rosa Franklin, Pattie Jackson, Jeffrey Peno, Myra Russel, Rebecca Ory and Kayla Farrar.

Ochsner Medical Center honorees were Nicole May, Teresa Palombo, Kristy Koontz, Shelley Graphia, Stephanie Debarbieris, Janene Ducote, Christa Wilborn and Kelly Landry.

Honored from Woman’s Hospital were Megan McNemar, Angela Musso, Karrie Delise and Kelly Sasser.

Also honored were Christy Perry, Sadye Batts and Angela Clouatre, Baton Rouge General Hosptial; Amy Rome, Lane Memorial; and Terra Hotstream, Baton Rouge General Bluebonnet.

Wanda Spurlock, Southern University School of Nursing, received the Helen Johnson Cremeens Excellence in Education Award.

Antiqua Smart, Southern University Health Center, and Cynthia York, were the recipients of the Edith Lobue Scholarship Award.
