Crawfish Aquatics turned over its lanes to neighbors teaching Gardere-area children how to swim.
The Gardere Initiative summer program participants learned basic swimming skills from instructors at Crawfish Aquatics according to each child’s swimming expertise and age.
Murelle Harrison, of the initiative, said money to fund the lessons was donated by Boston Celtics power forward Brandon Bass, a former LSU basketball player.
According to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, minority children between the ages of 5 and 14 are three times more likely to drown than nonminorities in the same age range.
