Students in the St. Michael High School band sat down and played music March 24 with students from St. Patrick High School, of Quebec, Canada.

David Parker, band director of the Canadian students, takes a tour of the South every other year to provide his students educational and fun opportunities, a news release from the school said. This year’s stops included trips to Lafayette, Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

St. Michael High School Band Director Kevin Andry was contacted by Parker via social media and jumped at the opportunity for his students to participate in a combined jam session with Parker’s students.

The morning began with a short meet-and-greet session. Students from St. Michael French classes were invited to join in, as they tried their best to converse in French with the visitors who were bilingual.

Band students from both ensembles performed separately at first and then got together to play and improvise together.

The musical hit of the morning was “The Chicken,” a funk piece made popular by bassist Jaco Pastorius.
