The Runnels School boys varsity basketball team sewed up the district 7-2A championship Feb. 9 with an 84-74 win against St. Thomas Aquinas in front of a home crowd.
“Once again,” said head coach Ben Young, “the Raiders came back from a second-half deficit. With 20 seconds left, senior Mohammad Pirzadah hit a game-tying three-pointer to send the game into overtime. Senior Josh Sparks sank a three-pointer to extend the lead, and the Raiders hit free throws down the stretch to seal the game.”
Senior Grant Welch led the team with 26 points, Sparks added 21 and Pirzadah had 16.
After adding an 85-70 win against French Settlement to the record Feb. 12, the Raiders stand at 9-2 in district play as they head into the playoffs, which begin Feb. 26.
