The USTA Boys and Girls 10s Southern Closed West Tennis Tournament was held at the Paula G. Manship YMCA’s Lamar Tennis Center.

The tournament, sponsored by the Greater Baton Rouge Community Tennis Association, started June 13 and ended June 16. Participants included 107 girls and boys who played throughout the weekend to win the title of United States Tennis Association Southern Closed West 10 and under champion.

This is the first time a Junior Southern Closed Tournament has been in Louisiana, a news release said.

Players had to qualify for their state and be endorsed to participate in the tournament, the release said.

Participating states included Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee.

The girl’s tournament winner was Anne Scott Gugliemo, who attends St. Aloysius School in Baton Rouge, and runner-up was Sobenna Egwuekwe, from Memphis, Tennessee.

The boy’s tournament winner was Carter Swope, from Rogers, Arkansas, and runner-up was Jaxon Lamb, from Greeneville, Tennessee.

Ashton Ellis, a fifth-grader at St. Aloysius, placed fifth overall in the boys singles division.

Ellis and doubles partner Michael Dudley, who attends The Dunham School, won the doubles title.

Anne Scott and her partner, Cydney Rogers, from Jonesboro, Arkansas, were third in doubles.
