BREC and Families Helping Families of Greater Baton Rouge are offering a pair of Sunshine Socials for those with disabilities and their families and friends. Both socials are from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.
Ages 16 and older will enjoy a Mardi Gras masquerade ball at Milton J. Womack Park, while ages 10 to 16 will gather at Independence Community Park.
Socials include a disc jockey, snacks and door prizes. A $5 donation supports the program, including supplies and door prizes.
Enjoy a special showing of the movie “Hidden Figures,” based on Margo Lee Shetterly's book, at Jones Creek Regional Branch Library at 2 p.m. Saturday. Refreshments will be served.

Lunar New Year
A children’s celebration of the Lunar New Year begins at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Jones Creek Regional Branch Library. It’s intended for ages 5-8.
Listen to Kieran Walsh’s “Chinese New Year” and Grace Lin’s “Bringing in the New Year,” then make a dragon helmet to wear home.

Polar bears and penguins
Fairwood Branch Library’s kids' story and craft includes “Virgil and Owen” by Paulette Bogan and “Polar Opposites” by Erik Brooks and the creation of a polar bear and penguin. It’s at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at Fairwood Branch Library.

Learn about “The Brides of La Baleine” from author Randall Ladnier at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Main Library. Ladnier will share the history of the 88 young French women who volunteered to marry soldiers and settlers in the Louisiana colony in 1720.
The women came to Louisiana on a ship named La Baleine, arriving in Biloxi in January 1721. Many married and had large families, some with descendants still living in Gulf Coast states. Ladnier himself is a descendant of bride Marie Angelique Girard.
Jones Creek Regional Branch Library’s bingo night at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 22 celebrates the Academy Awards. Wear a costume inspired by an award-winning movie. Prizes will be awarded.
The community is invited to the annual Black History Month ceremony at Independence Park Theatre from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 22. All ages are welcome.
The program reflects on and recognizes the contributions Africa-Americans have made in East Baton Rouge Parish and around the world.

Swamp volunteer day
Save the date for Bluebonnet Swamp Volunteer Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 24. Volunteers will be provided gloves and hand tools to help root out invasive plant species in the swamp.
