The Runnels High School drama department will present the award-winning Broadway musical comedy “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” for three performances March 13-15 in the Gladys Hague Runnels Theatre.
The all-student production will bring audiences through ancient Rome, where comedy reigns and slapstick rules the day.
The plot follows the exploits of Pseudolus, a lazy yet clever slave, as he scrambles to secure the hand of Philia, a beautiful but empty-headed courtesan, for his master’s son, Hero, in exchange for winning his freedom, a news release from the school said. He tries to set the two up, but discovers he’s bitten off more than he can chew when he learns that Philia has been promised to the mighty Roman captain, Miles Glorious. A succession of plot twists hinging on mistaken identity, scheming neighbors and a phony funeral take us on a merry chase in pursuit of a predictably happy ending.
With music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a script by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, the 1962 Broadway hit won several Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Book.
In the Runnels cast are John Wiese as Pseudolus, Max Morgan as Senex, Nicole Gardana as Domina, Everett Hibner as Hero, Caleb Manning as Hysterium, Allie Nicholson as Marcus Lycus and Connor Matthews as the Hand of Miles Glorious.
