St. Michael High School coaches and alumni served as volunteers and guest judges at the recent Louisiana Special Olympics in Hammond.
St. Michael head football and powerlifting coach Paul Varnado, head soccer coach Paul Fletcher, and class of 2008 alumnus Austin Fletcher were among those providing support May 25 during the powerlifting events.
“It was a very special day,” Varnado said. “You can see that this competition, this event, this entire weekend means so much to these guys, and it really means a lot to me to help provide the environment for them to participate and succeed in.”
That same sentiment was followed up by Fletcher.
“This is something we like to do regularly,” Fletcher said.
In February, the boys’ soccer team participated in ARC of Baton Rouge’s Soccer Skills Session at Independence Park. ARC is one of the nation’s largest organizations that helps people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
“We encourage our players to think of others by offering their time,” Fletcher said. “We try to instill in them the importance of service to their community, to those less fortunate, and serving God.”
The games were held over Memorial Day weekend at Southeastern Louisiana University.
